The other managers are not pragmatic. They will play attacking brand and lose in quarters like 3-2,4-3 ,there will be goals and eye catchy style of football , fans will be happy but they will not cross quarters. Gareth exemplifies pragmatism and guarantees results .

He’s the most over rated manager I’ve ever seen in my life. In the World Cup we got to the semi final in the easiest route in World Cup history. Came up against a semi decent side in Croatia and got knocked out. Also player Belgium twice, once in the group and once for runners up they beat us both times. In the euros we played most games at Wembley including the final. The Italians absolutely dominated us in the game. Then he chose kids to take penalty’s. get him gone.

Really hope Southgate stays with England until the 2026 world cup is over, at minimum. Tactically we've improved so much since he's been manager, there's a good feel vibe whenever you watch England now and Southgate is very much a big part of that. There is something special happening with England at the moment and that's only going to continue and grow over the coming years. He knows he how special the current group is, hopefully it's enough for him to commit long term.

totally agree with you on that. he is breaking all vodoos one at a time. penalties against Colombia in WC 2018, Beating Germany in a knockout in Euro 2020, he took some learning points from playing an elite European side losing the Euros final to Italy, now all he is left to do is to hold some friendlies with South American elite sides. Brazil , Argentina & Uruguay so he doesn't get caught off guard when drawn against them in Qatar come 2022.

This is the best England manager we have had in a long long time! His holistic leadership (both football and non-football matters) has been second to none. AND importantly the team has delivered the results to back up his leadership approach. Qualification for every tournament and either reaching the semi or finals of those tournaments. I can remember when qualification wasn't delivered, when we struggled to exit the group stages in tournaments if we did qualify. I hope he signs but I also know he will not want to overstay his welcome and if he feels somebody else can do a better job, he won't stand in the way. In any case, assuming we aren't going back to having imported managers, which English coach/manager could at this point do a better job?

@ekwe johnson Doesn't matter how England were doing before it matters whats happening now. Southgate is not a bad manager, but he is also not a very good one. As keane says it doesn't take much talent or skill to throw 10 quality players behind the halfway line to block out the goal. England have always lacked technical ability, and in the final against Italy the most technical england players were all on the bench, and his whole formation was defend against an Italy side where man for man England were just as good, if not better.

I would argue that England has seen no progress. It looks on the surface that a Semi Final and Final is progress. But not when the teams we've played to get to them we either werre expecting to beat or were having a nightmare competition anyway. The very moment England are faced with a team who are equal or better than us ... we lose. How is that progress?

Everyone saying we’ve got a team that should win are missing what wins these tournaments. A world class midfield. Spain had Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets. Germany had Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Khedira. France had Pogba, Kante, Matuidi. Italy had Locatelli, Jorginho, Veratti. Portugal are the only outliers in the last 10 years and they won one game in normal time the whole tournament. England develop truly world class midfielders then we won’t win anything. Or we try and do a Portugal and win solely off a solid defense and scrappy wins.

The World Cup and euros were the happiest I’ve been with the team. In my opinion the ONLY thing he did wrong in the euros was have Saka ( a 19 year old ) plus 2 subs with near 0 gametime take penalties, instead of having Shaw / Sterling take penalties, who were A) our players of the tournament, and B) are a little bit older / more mature with more experience. 1 criticism isn’t a lot for a whole tournament. @Herbal couldn't agree more. Capello had a relatively easy group at Sth Africa 2010 and they bottled it coming 2nd. If they topped their group they would have had an easy run in through the knockout phase. Instead they faced Germany and got smashed. Hodgson had Iceland in front of them, on paper a good run in to the semi final at least but even they bottled it against Iceland. Other managers have had their opportunities but they screwed up. Southgate could have easily bowed out to Colombia and Sweden at Wc2018 but they held firm to head into the semis. Considering they were so disappointing at euro 2016, that's a pretty good achievement. What im getting at is Southgate is able to make these favourable run ins by getting the basics right at the start of the tournaments. Btw I'm not even English and dont understand the hate

Can only play who's infront of you. 2 semis, 1 final. Better than any manager we've had since '66, that counts for something. We never speak about easy runs when it's other teams getting to finals or winning tournaments, why is it always England who magically benefits from easy runs? End of the day whether you like it or not, we have seen progress in the last 4 years, thanks to Southgate. Everybody saying oh we'll do so much better with [insert top manager] but do you really think the FA is that competent? That they'll actually do that. We've had these opportunities before and look, we ended up with Mclaren, Sven, Cappello etc. Part of the success for this team is that Southgate is English, played for England in a big tournament and knows how to grind results. Anybody calling for him to go at this point is actually deluded and has no clue.

Tactically inept, safety first, which is fine for lesser opponents, but when faced with the best in the world is found to be lacking ideas which clearly shows on the pitch.

The Germany win was only surprising for those that were not following the german team for the last year. They have been absolutely terrible compared to the potential that their squad had. They went to the Euros without having a right back in their squad and with pretty much every player being played out of position. Their terrible game against Hungary was not a slip up, it was a normal performance from them while their win against Portugal was a huge upset instead of a normal performance from them

@Aaron Ramsdale Golden Generation were not a golden generation. Gary Neville even said it himself. They were quite frankly, very over rated. The dreary performances and and lack of possession was so common for the so called "Golden Generation". Even friendlies against Mexico they had less posession and were made to look like school boys. Having technical players that were great on the ball and could pass and take players on England never had! The only player really being Paul scholes. Point is England have the best technical team in terms of ability on the ball, speed and pace that they have ever had. Throwing 10 players behind a ball and not utilizing your most technical players is not a skill. It doesn't take that much talent, go southgate to do that

Yh but these previous England teams had much harder routes to the final, okay 2016 was an embarrassment because we lost to Iceland. But look at the previous years, 2014 got put into the hardest group Italy and Uruguay. 2012 lost to Italy in round of 16. 2010 lost to Germany in round of 16. Southgate has been very lucky with his routes to the final last two tournaments, and euro 2020 was basically a home tournament
